  • The American Cancer Society recommends that men and women start getting colon health screenings starting at age 50.  Common schedules for screenings that detect cancer and polyps include any one of the following:

    • Colonoscopy every 10 years (unless otherwise advised by a physician)
    • Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years (unless otherwise advised by a physician)
    • Double-contrast barium enema every 5 years (unless otherwise advised by a physician)
    • CT colonography or virtual colonoscopy every 5 years (unless otherwise advised by a physician)
